The DreamCloud hybrid mattress fulfills many of our criteria for what a perfect mattress must have. With eight unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud makes use of all the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud Base

From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Resting underneath are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress has better quality comfort materials than other hybrid mattresses.

Despite the fact that it makes use of numerous polyurethane foam layers, there’s no hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you want to sink into a mattress, the DreamCloud is probably not for you.

A pocketed coil support core makes sure that you are aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud Base

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humungous 15″. The 8-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work together to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief. Dreamcloud Base

Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m excited to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together.

dreamcloud-construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a polyester and cashmere mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with polyurethane foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll notice three layers of memory foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The core of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling. Dreamcloud Base

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to spread motion throughout the structure. The coils also help in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After discussing the build of the DreamCloud, let us chat about the feel and firmness. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in deeper, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and felt a pleasant lift from these springs.

DreamCloud-Firmness

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of distinct body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Instead of giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I asked 3 other individuals to give their view as well. This should give you a much better sense of the firmness level you should expect from the DreamCloud.

The testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that the DreamCloud is quite firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you are sleeping on top of the mattress, instead of in it.

Pressure Map

Instead of just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I decided to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my side, back, and tummy. You can see the results on the diagram below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

DreamCloud-Pressure-Map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into it in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area while the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported, while the top foam layers relieved any discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the mattress did an awesome job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which I think is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will probably want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. The next test is meant to illustrate the intensity of movement that is felt from one side of the mattress from the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance. Dreamcloud Base

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting his/her position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite great at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and took a look at how much they compacted the top of the mattress.

The differences in size, density, and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

DreamCloud-Sinkage-Test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you are going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you will be sharing your bed with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the level of edge support it’ll provide.

I am very interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Moving closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the upper foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I experienced compression in the foam layers, however, it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this last position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. Most foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
