Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Frame
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humungous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief. Because of all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to look at these layers to understand how well they mesh with one another.
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with polyurethane foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find 3 layers of memory foam. While these layers are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly crucial for the temperature regulation of the mattress as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling. Dreamcloud Mattress Frame
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and help spread motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After discussing the build of the DreamCloud, let’s talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantaneously felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous comfort. Pushing in deeper, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and felt a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of distinct body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my sentiment on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This should provide you with a much better idea of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
The individuals were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the DreamCloud a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the individuals that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you are sleeping on top of this mattress, as opposed to in it.
Instead of simply discussing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where an individual may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the graph below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region while the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine aligned.
Side – As you can see in the diagram above, when I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported, and the top foam layers relieved any discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Rolling over to my tummy, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which I think can be important for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will probably want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to show you the amount of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other.
To demonstrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance. Dreamcloud Mattress Frame
The DreamCloud exhibits a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty great at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes the DreamCloud an awesome solution for couples.
While getting a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface of the mattress.
The differences in size, density, and weight are supposed to mimic varying body parts and different sized sleepers.
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, when you sink through these layers, you will reach the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Dreamcloud Mattress Frame
If you are going to share your mattress with someone and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which cannot fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported on the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Moving closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In the last position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. Most foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up well.
