Nectar Sleep offers a memory foam mattress using better quality foam materials relative to its competitors at a much lower cost. Don’t be tricked into believing the Nectar mattress is not of similar caliber as the Casper or Leesa — it very much is. Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Having gel memory foam built into the bottom of the cover and a layer of memory foam under, the Nectar shapes well, but doesn’t have the exact same hug frequently associated with memory foam beds. Both the gel memory foam along with the absence of sink-in feel mean the Nectar sleeps significantly cooler than most memory foam models.

A support core composed of high-density polyfoam is built to withstand the test of time. Given its construct, we expect the Nectar to last at least 7-8 years, making it a lasting choice.

The Nectar is hard to beat at this price, so if you’re searching for an affordable bed built with quality materials, your search can end here.

Brand Snapshot Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Since its founding, Nectar Sleep has employed a smart strategy of cheeky marketing and focused product development to evolve into one of the biggest players in the online bed-in-a-box market. Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Considering its prevalence, the brand is frequently compared to Casper and Purple, two giants in the Direct-to-Consumer mattress world. Though all 3 mattresses have substantially different feels (which I’ll dissect in full later on in this review), they do gain from a similar amount of brand recognition and notoriety on websites likes ours and Reddit.

It’s worth noting that at $699 for a Queen, the Nectar is far less expensive than either the Casper or the Purple, each of which come in at roughly $1,000.

Construction Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Let’s begin with the Nectar bed review. As I mentioned above, this is an all-foam mattress made up of three different layers which stack up to an 11″ profile. The most notable aspect of the Nectar’s construction is its whopping 4″ of memory foam up top, which results in a significant amount of body contouring and sinkage.

To see how all this comes together, let’s dive into the mattress!

Nectar Mattress Layers

Cover – The cover is made up of of both cotton and Tencel,

an eco friendly substance known for its breathability and softness. Furthermore, there’s an inch of gel memory foam quilted into the cover, which provides the sleeper with some immediate comfort. The combination of the gel infusion and Tencel fibers make for an ultra-cool layer that’ll help regulate temperatures during the evening.

Comfort Layer – Directly under the cover, you will encounter 3″ of memory foam. This material has a remarkably slow response to stress, allowing the sleeper to really sink in for some satisfying pressure relief. As the foam shapes to the curves of your body, you’re likely to feel as though you’re sleeping more”in” the mattress compared to”on top” of it, which may be a nice feel for side sleepers needing cushiony support in the shoulders and hips.

Transition Layer – Up next you’ll find a transitional layer of memory foam, which has a marginally quicker reaction to pressure compared to the foams over it. This section is meant to alleviate the sleeper into the firmer foundation under, helping extend the contouring of the comfort layer even deeper into the mattress.

Foundation Layer – Rounding out the construction we’ve got 6 inches of high-density poly foam. This section gives the bed its stability and shape, providing a firm foundation upon which the softer foams will react.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the Nectar, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting some light hand pressure into the mattress and found I was immediately interacting with all the thick layers of memory foam up top. I could feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the gentle foams contouring around my fingers. Pushing in further, I experienced deeper sinkage into the bed.

Since folks of different body types and sizes are going to feel stability differently, I made a decision to bring in three other testers to have a look at the Nectar Sleep mattress. We all took turns lying on the bed, and gave it a personal evaluation, then compiled them onto the chart below.

nectar-firmness-chart

While texture is always likely to be a personal thing, our responses should give you with a good notion of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Although there was a little discrepancy with our answers, we did end on a mean firmness rating of 6.5, which syncs perfectly with the industry standard for medium firmness.

I personally gave the Nectar a 6 as I found its thick memory foam layers gave a gentle, pressure-relieving vibe. Regardless of the position, I stretched out in, I could feel the mattress contouring to the shape of my body, resulting in some pretty intense sinkage. While this translated to a softer rating for me, some sleepers may find memory foam to provide a firmer sense as their bodies gradually acclimate to its morphing contour.

Pressure Map

Another important part of a new mattress’s feel is pressure, or more specifically where pressure points are likely to form while lying on top of it.

To help you visualize where these pressure points may arise, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

nectar-pressure-map

Back – Lying on my back, I felt some great pressure relief as the soft memory foam top layers contoured to my body and filled in the space at my lumbar region. While you may find memory foam to have an initially firm texture, once you provide your body a couple of minutes to sink in, you will discover that it’s actually quite giving. A trade off for this gratifying pressure relief is that I did find it a bit hard to move around and change positions. Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Edge Support – Testing out the edge support of this bed, I did discover some compression in the soft foam top layers. But, the high-density poly foam base did a fantastic job of supporting my weight in this position, which enabled me to feel secure on the side of the mattress.

Side – Turning on my side, I continued to feel fantastic pressure relief from this mattress. Side sleepers tend to favor softer mattresses which shape snuggly to the shoulders and hips, and the Nectar more than delivers on that front.

Stomach – Regrettably, this comfort did not necessarily carry over when I rolled onto my stomach. The thick layers of memory foam caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders, which made for a little tension along my backbone. Overall, stomach sleepers usually opt for firmer mattresses, therefore I was not overly surprised by this result.

Motion Transfer

Up next, let us take a look at motion transfer. This test will demonstrate the quantity of disturbance detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other, which could be particularly critical for those of you who share their bed with a partner.

To demonstrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Every drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you are likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

nectar-motion-transfer

These are amazing motion transfer results! The thick layers of memory foam up top work to soften movement across the structure, making sure that you will not be overly bothered by your bed partner’s tossing and turning in the evening.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different densities and sizes (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 1 inch of sinkage. Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 3.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 6 inches of sinkage.

I honestly believed these results would be a bit more intense! As I rolled around the Nectar, I was surprised by how much my body sank into the memory foam top layers, so it’s sort of surprising to find that the real measurements are consistent with those of other all-foam mattresses on the market. That being said, you are still more likely to feel as though you’re sleeping “in” the Nectar as opposed to “on top” of it.

The Nectar Mattress vs The Competition

Now that we have broken down the particular, nitty-gritty details of the Nectar, let us widen the scope and have a peek at some of its biggest competitors in the game. While each mattress has unique features that make it a distinctive product in the market, it can be useful to contextualize these distinctions against other mattresses. Plus, who doesn’t love a little cross-referencing before making a big purchase?

Nectar vs Purple

Comparing Purple and Nectar is like comparing apples and oranges — both are great in their own right, but inherently distinct products.

– One of the most noticeable differences comes in the Purple’s hyper-elastic polymer comfort layer. Unlike memory foam, this is a really bouncy material that provides pressure relief without an excessive amount of body contouring.

– The hyper-elastic polymer grid additionally makes the Purple”temperature neutral”, resulting in a much cooler sleeping experience than the Nectar.

– And finally, where the Nectar has virtually no bounce, the Purple has an enormous amount of buoyant support.

Nectar vs Casper

Although the Casper and Nectar are constructed completely of foam, they actually have incredibly divergent feels, with the latter featuring considerably more sinkage compared to the former.

– Additionally, one of the standout features of the Casper is its section of Zoned Support, which provides targeted relief to the hips and shoulders.

– This also means that the Casper has a more balanced feel than the Nectar, endearing it to a larger range of sleepers.

Everything Else You Need To Know About Nectar

Does It Sleep Hot?

Unlike the majority of other memory foam mattresses that generally sleep a bit hot, the Nectar offers a high level of cooling. The top layer of gel memory foam, paired together with the infused cover keeps it cool, while giving maximum comfort.

Because the Nectar is a high density foam, some may find it somewhat warmer than a coil, latex, or hybrid foam mattress.

Overall, our study did reveal that the Nectar is definitely one of the cooler memory foam mattresses on the market today.

Does It Have Any Smell?

Fresh from the box, the mattress will have a fairly strong odor for the first two days. But after, the odor starts to fade, and in just a week is completely gone.

So, if the odor is something that actually bothers you, I suggest not sleeping on it the first couple days.Memory Foam Versus Gel Mattress

Does It Require A Foundation?

The Nectar mattress could be sat right on a box spring. Or if you want, a platform or almost any other flat supportive surface. It can also be utilized with any adjustable bed frame, that can fit an 11 inch mattress.

You can also put the Nectar right on the ground if that’s what you would like to do. Just make sure that there isn’t any water or moisture around.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Nectar?

The Nectar requires no flipping. However, it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly one or two times a year to prevent it from excessive sagging or from wearing down.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cool water along mild dish soap, to clean any stains or dirt. Always wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.

How Durable Is The Nectar Mattress?

In comparison to other foam mattresses, the Nectar according to our research has a long lifespan.

The Nectar is manufactured with high quality materials and matches  all industry standards. According to our research, the Nectar scores an 80 percent owner satisfaction rating and continues to increase in popularity now.

Is the Nectar Mattress Right For You?

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the mattress, I am going to give you a few recommendations and some of the very common Nectar complaints:

Recommendations

– First and foremost, I’d suggest the Nectar for everyone who wants that classic memory foam texture, deep body shaping and all.

– More importantly, I would say this mattress might be a real winner for side sleepers, that will benefit from its cushiony pressure relief at the shoulders and buttocks.

– Considering its superb motion transfer and edge support results, I’d also say the Nectar might be a good choice for couples.

Nectar Complaints

– While a great deal of people will dig the thick layers of memory foam in this bed, I’d say that stomach sleepers may find that it pushes their buttocks out of alignment with their shoulders.

– It also has virtually no rebound, which might be a dealbreaker for those sleepers in search of buoyant support.
