As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our criteria for what a quality mattress must provide. With 8 exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud makes use of all the proper materials in its construction. Where To Test Dreamcloud Mattress

From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good cooling, to the gel memory foam on the top comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a combination of memory foam and latex layers, which means this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other mattresses.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple polyurethane foam layers, there is no hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, the DreamCloud is probably not for you.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly for for those of you who sleep on your back.

Construction Where To Test Dreamcloud Mattress

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The 8-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief. Where To Test Dreamcloud Mattress

Because of all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover – The cover is composed of a polyester and cashmere blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with polyurethane foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will notice three layers of memory foam. While these layers are soft to the touch and give some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the 3 layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the mattress as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling. Where To Test Dreamcloud Mattress

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help spread motion throughout the structure. The coils also help in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam can be found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After looking at the build of the DreamCloud, let us chat about the firmness and feel. I began by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to feel all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

DreamCloud-Firmness

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of distinct body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to give their view as well. This should give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

The individuals were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that the DreamCloud is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other individuals that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress, instead of in it.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the graph below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

DreamCloud-Pressure-Map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into it at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported, while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the mattress did an awesome job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which I think can be important for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will probably want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. The next experiment is intended to show you the amount of movement that is felt from one side of the mattress from the other.

To demonstrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance. Where To Test Dreamcloud Mattress

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud exhibits a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates an individual rolling around and adjusting his/her position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, the majority of individuals want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To present this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top of the mattress.

The variations in size, density, and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers.

DreamCloud-Sinkage-Test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the wrapped coils and experience great support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you will be sharing your bed with a partner and need to make use of the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be important that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported on the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the upper foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I experienced compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In the last position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up well.
